Basalt Fibre Composite with Carbon Nanomodified Epoxy Matrix under Hydrothermal Ageing

2021

This work aimed to investigate the effect of hybrid carbon nanofillers (e.g., carbon nanotubes/carbon nanofibers in the ratio 1:1 by mass) over the electrical and flexural properties for an epoxy matrix and corresponding basalt fibre reinforcing composite (BFRC) subjected to full-year seasonal water absorption. Hydrothermal ageing was performed by full immersion of the tested materials into distilled water according to the following model conditions (seasons). The mechanical properties were measured in three-point bending mode before environmental ageing and after each season. Upon environmental ageing, the relative change of flexural strength and elastic modulus of the epoxy and NC was wit…

Electronic Absorption Spectra of HXeCl, HXeBr, HXeI, and HXeCN in Xe Matrix

2000

The electronic UV absorption spectra of thermal reaction products H−Xe−Y (Y= Cl, Br, I, or CN) have been measured in solid Xe at 12 K. The spectra are obtained after the annealing of an extensively...

Modifications of optical absorption band of center in silica

2005

Abstract We report an experimental study of the modifications induced by gamma ray irradiation and by thermal treatment of both the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and the optical absorption spectra of the E γ ′ center in silica. Our data show that the main g-values of E γ ′ EPR signal change as a function of the irradiation dose together with a red shift of the peak position of the absorption band around 5.8 eV attributed to the same center. Changes in the opposite direction are observed in both signals after thermal treatments. The peak position change of the optical absorption band is in quantitative agreement with the g-values shift. This strict correlation is evidence for the exi…

230Th/U-dating of a late Holocene low uranium speleothem from Cuba

2010

We present 22 U-series ages for a stalagmite from north-western Cuba based on multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) and thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS). Our results reveal that the stalagmite continuously grew within the last ~1400a. Low uranium content of the sample and thus, extremely low 230Th concentrations limit the precision and accuracy of 230Th/U-dating by TIMS. Samples measured by MC-ICPMS show a high variability of 232Th content along the growth axis with some sections significantly affected by initial 230Th from a detrital phase. An a-priori bulk earth ratio for (238U/232Th) cannot be used to accurately account for this initial 230Th.…

Electronic properties of Co2MnSi thin films studied by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

2009

This work reports on the electronic properties of thin films of the Heusler compound Co2MnSi studied by means of hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). The results of photoelectron spectroscopy from multilayered thin films excited by photons of 2?8?keV are presented. The measurements were performed on (substrate/buffer layer/Co2MnSi(z)/capping layer) multilayers with a thickness z ranging from 0 to 50?nm. It is shown that high energy spectroscopy is a valuable tool for non-destructive depth profiling. The experimentally determined values of the inelastic electron mean free path in Co2MnSi increase from about 19.5 to 67?? on increasing the kinetic energy from about 1.9 to 6.8?keV. T…

Innovative non-thermal technologies affecting potato tuber and fried potato quality

2019

Abstract Background Potatoes are important tubers for human consumption, providing an essential source of energy and great nutritional characteristics for human health. However, before consumption, potato tubers need to be stored and processed. As frying is the most common technique used in potato processing, fried potato is the most important processed potato product. Some food characteristics, provided by the frying process, are considered desirable, but others are harmful to human health and, thereby the main challenge is to reduce the formation of the undesirable characteristics, without compromising the sensorial attributes. Scope and approach In this review, the origin, economic impor…

Applications of a remote sensing-based two-source energy balance algorithm for mapping surface fluxes without in situ air temperature observations

2012

Abstract The two-source energy balance (TSEB) model uses remotely sensed maps of land–surface temperature (LST) along with local air temperature estimates at a nominal blending height to model heat and water fluxes across a landscape, partitioned between dual sources of canopy and soil. For operational implementation of TSEB, however, it is often difficult to obtain representative air temperature data that are compatible with the LST retrievals, which may themselves have residual errors due to atmospheric and emissivity corrections. To address this issue, two different strategies in applying the TSEB model without requiring local air temperature data were tested over a typical Mediterranean…

General application of Jäntti's method for the fast calculation of sorption equilibrium

2004

On the basis of a molecular model for adsorption kinetics Jantti introduced a method to calculate equilibriums shortly after a change of the pressure of the sorptive gas. In the present paper we show that this method is useful in many more situations than those intended originally.

Analysis of ecstasy in oral fluid by ion mobility spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy after liquid-liquid extraction.

2014

We developed and evaluated two different strategies for determining abuse drugs based on (i) the analysis of saliva by ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) after thermal desorption and (ii) the joint use of IMS and infrared (IR) spectroscopy after liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) to enable the sensitivity-enhanced detection and double confirmation of ecstasy (MDMA) abuse. Both strategies proved effective for the intended purpose. Analysing saliva by IMS after thermal desorption, which provides a limit of detection (LOD) of 160μgL(-1), requires adding 0.2M acetic acid to the sample and using the truncated negative second derivative of the ion mobility spectrum. The joint use of IMS and IR spe…

Piezosurgery in endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy

2009

Piezosurgery is a recently developed system for cutting bone with microvibrations. The equipment consists of two hand pieces, two inserts, and two peristaltic pumps connected to the control unit. The device is endowed with an irrigation system of high-flow saline solution that breaks up into very small particles, with a “bloodless” effect on the surgical site and a low indirect thermal damage to the bone surfaces and adjacent structures. 4,5 The touch screen of the main unit permits selection of the specific insert, and modulation of the irrigation and the power according to the bone density. The device uses low-frequency ultrasonic waves (24.7-29.5 kHz), the applied power can be modulated …
